The Five Essentials of Gutter Maintenance

Maintenance includes washing your gutters to keep them clear of debris

Does your home have gutters? If you’re living in the pacific northwest, it probably should. But, just because you have gutters doesn’t mean that they’re working properly.

The truth is that gutters need regular maintenance, and without that effort, they often fail to work properly. Not to worry, gutter maintenance doesn’t have to be all that hard. We’ve distilled it into five easy steps that will help you manage water runoff to protect your home through even the rainiest seasons!

Good gutter maintenance includes Cleaning the rain gutter during autumn

1. Keep Them Clear

Cleaning gutters can sometimes be a pain, but it’s the number one rule of gutter maintenance for a reason. The logic is simple. If you get a bunch of debris in your gutters, then the crud blocks the flow of water. If water can’t flow, it spills over the sides. If water spills over the sides, then what is the point of having gutters?

In most cases, you only need to clean your gutters once a year. After the leaves fall in the autumn, take the time to clear them completely. Then, they should have minimal debris buildup until the next autumn.

The big exception is if your gutters are under evergreens. Those needles fall all year round, so you’ll just have to manage (but take a look at tip #4 for a little help with that).

2. Inspect for Damage

The thing about weather is that it eventually breaks everything, even your nice gutters. Aluminum gutters typically last for years, but you should do at least an annual inspection to see any early warning signs of wear and tear.

Leaks are the biggest problem, but cracks, dents, and other signs of damage should never be ignored.

When you do find a problem, repair it as needed. Sometimes, you can seal a leak or replace a small section of your gutter. Other times, you need to call in the big guns. Either way, help is always available.

3. Manage the Downspouts

We mentioned keeping the gutters clear, but it’s important that you don’t overlook the downspouts. Downspouts can clog, and it can be easy to miss when they do.

If you’re doing this when it isn’t raining, you can run the garden hose to make sure the downspouts are clear. If they aren’t clear, a pressure nozzle on your hose is usually enough to get the clog out.

In the worst cases, you can use a router or other snaking tool to take care of it.

Install gutter guards for easier gutter maintenance

4. Install a Gutter Guard

If clutter is a routine problem for your gutters (and here in the Northwest, that’s often the case), then you can automate some of your maintenance with a gutter guard.

If you aren’t familiar, these nifty devices go over the top of your gutters like a shield. They have a screen that catches most debris while letting the water through.

You need to clear the guard regularly, but that’s a lot easier than digging leaves, needles, and dirt out of the trenches. Usually, you can hose them off or sweep them if it’s dry enough.

5. Fix Positioning

The last thing you want to do is check the flow of the gutters once or twice a year. Weather and animals can turn your downspouts and have them pouring water in the wrong direction.

On top of that, the run-off from your gutters can accelerate erosion. After a few years, you might find that you need to point the downspouts in a different direction. It depends on the terrain, but the point remains. Wind damage can also affect your gutters positioning and health. Ensure that water is flowing correctly every once in a while.
